Osteoprotegerin (OPG) as a biomarker for diabetic cardiovascular complications
نویسنده
چکیده
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a glycoprotein involved in bone metabolisms and with a regulatory role in immune, skeletal and vascular systems. Recently, circulating OPG levels have emerged as independent biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with acute or chronic heart disease, as well as in the healthy population. Furthermore, OPG has been implicated in various inflammations and linked to diabetes and poor glycaemic control. This review focuses on the relations between circulating OPG levels and cardiovascular complications, with special emphasis on diabetic patients. OPG levels were observed to increase concurrently with the severity of diabetic complications, that is, with the highest circulating OPG levels observed in diabetic patients dying from CVD. Although the clinical prognostic use of OPG may seem far away, OPG does look promising as a biomarker in order to help the cardiologist to a better risk-stratification of the patients.

Osteoprotegerin in Cardiometabolic Disorders
Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a glycoprotein traditionally implicated in bone remodelling, has been recently related to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Human studies show a positive relationship between circulating OPG, vascular damage, and CVD, and as such OPG has emerged as a potential biomarker for CVD. This review focuses on the relationship between circulating OPG and different endocrine cardiometa...
متن کاملIncreased plasma concentrations of osteoprotegerin in type 2 diabetic patients with microvascular complications.
OBJECTIVE Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a newly identified inhibitor of bone resorption. Recent studies indicate that OPG also acts as an important regulatory molecule in the vasculature. Plasma levels of OPG seem to be elevated in subjects with diabetes as well as in non-diabetic subjects with cardiovascular disease. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between plasma OPG lev...
متن کاملOsteoprotegerin and Vascular Calcification: Clinical and Prognostic Relevance.
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a key regulator in bone metabolism, that also has effect in vascular system. Studies suggest that osteoprotegerin is a critical arterial calcification inhibitor, and is released by endothelial cells as a protective mechanism for their survival in certain pathological conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and other metabolic disorders. That has b...
متن کاملOsteoprotegerin as a Marker of Atherosclerosis in Diabetic Patients
Atherosclerosis is the principal cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and has many risk factors, among which is diabetes. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a soluble glycoprotein, involved in bone metabolism. OPG is also found in other tissues, and studies have shown that it is expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells. OPG has been implicated in various inflammations and also has been linked to diabet...
متن کاملPlasma osteoprotegerin levels are associated with glycaemic status, systolic blood pressure, kidney function and cardiovascular morbidity in type 1 diabetic patients.
OBJECTIVE The bone-related peptide osteoprotegerin (OPG) has recently been found in increased amounts in the vasculature in diabetes. It is produced by vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells, and may be implicated in the development of vascular calcifications. OPG is present in the circulation, where increased amounts have been observed in patients with diabetes. In this study, we examine...
